Tools

There are man kitchen tools that will assist you in making recipes easier to construct.

Food Processor and Blender

So many of the recipes call for blended items or chopped and grated. These two tools are definitely needed for these procedures. It makes your work easier and less time consuming. I think I may use the food processor more than the blender, but I need the blender too.

Knives

A large chefs knife will cost you in the beginning, but it will make it well worth it in the long run. A small paring knife is necessary too.

You should also consider getting a knife sharpener, even if you have a knife block with one built in. Sharp knives are safer and easier to use than dull blades. You can find a decent sharpener at a home goods store like Bed Bath & Beyond for around $20 that will last you for years.

Cutting Boards:

I have two cutting boards that I use. One is specifically for meats/proteins and one is for vegetables and other items that need chopping. It is easy to cross contaminate your food. You should be sure to use one board just for proteins. As soon as you are through the process of trimming and cutting the protein, you should immediately wash the board with warm soapy water and dry well. Also wash the knife you used to cut the protein.

Extra Items
Whisk, colander, bowl scrapers (spatulas), measuring spoons, measuring cups, a set of mixing bowls, vegetable peeler and an immersion blender. More will be added at a later time, but these should get you started.

Casserole dishes will be needed. There are many types and sizes. Be sure that you buy the right size to fit your recipe. Remember, this is Cooking For Two, so you should not need large dishes. Try to stay in the quart or quart and a half size. Smaller will work in most of the recipes too.

As you go along, you may shop for items that you don’t really need, but may save you in time. One of my favorite places to shop is the kitchen section of the dollar stores. Many of their items are useful and cheap. They may also tease you into trying recipes that may need that utensil.
